Research area
Immerse yourself in the specialised field of education and economics. This area focuses on understanding the factors that influence higher education participation and completion rates. You will have the opportunity to develop insights that can inform policy and practice, ultimately driving improvements in educational outcomes.
The project
The participation rate of young adults attending higher education has increased. At the same time, non-completion has also increased. So it is important to consider not only higher education access but also higher education completion and success. Within the predetermined topic, the candidate will explore the system-level determinants (including social, ethical, economic, political, and historical dimensions) of participation and completion rates in tertiary education.
You will play a key role in advancing research on the determinants of higher education participation and completion. This project aims to develop new methodologies for understanding these determinants and provide a platform for you to develop your skills and make impactful contributions.
Key focus areas
As a PhD candidate, you will focus on:
- System-level determinants: Explore the social, ethical, economic, political, and historical factors influencing higher education participation and completion.
- Policy implications: Investigate how these determinants can inform policy to improve educational outcomes.
- Data analysis: Collect and analyse data on participation and completion rates.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration: Work with experts in education, economics, and policy to develop comprehensive solutions.
Research Approach
This project employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining advanced data analysis techniques with policy analysis to understand the determinants of higher education participation and completion. You will:
- Implement data analysis techniques: Develop and refine methodologies to analyse participation and completion rates.
- Conduct policy analysis: Perform analyses to understand the implications of different determinants on educational outcomes.
- Collect and analyse data: Gather data on participation and completion rates and analyse the results.
- Collaborate across disciplines: Work with interdisciplinary teams to integrate findings from various fields, ensuring a holistic approach to the research.
Eligibility
The studentship is awarded based on outstanding academic merit.
Candidates should have an undergraduate degree (first or upper second class) in a relevant subject. A Master’s degree is essential, preferably at distinction level or equivalent.
